Morning Parallel-Track Session - June 10th

Familiarity, Flexibility, and Frames … Adaptations to Experience in the Stream of Innovation: Not What You Think It Is

Presented by Audrey Murphy
Primary Focus: Innovation
Secondary Focus: Mindfulness

Abstract: Innovation is vulnerable to adaptive processes of experience in 21st century organizations. As provocations in the stream of innovation, this presentation will explore familiarity, flexibility, and frames as adaptive processes of experience along the pathway to innovation. Adaptive processes of experience are much more powerful than we think. They represent and influence stories and mental models that are linked together in familiar ways, which often contribute to lessons learned that are easily understood for assimilation into new experiences. At the same time, adaptive processes of experience can impede and limit novel ways of thinking. Familiarity and flexibility of stories and mental models are organized ways of thinking that provide barriers to new experiences or frames by which new lessons can be learned relative to innovation. In addition, adaptive processes of experience are considered myopic, which underpin problems of individual gratification. Given these instances, it is unlikely that deviation from routines, established practices, and knowledge can be achieved. Exploring how theses adaptive processes can impact the pathway to innovation has the potential to enlighten and inspire new themes and interpretations in our thinking. Mindfulness as a way to free the mind and unlock greater potential for novel thinking can help individuals to see the world in deliberate ways that could never be imagined. The practice of mindfulness involves purposeful focus of attention and acceptance on the here and now while suspending judgment as opposed to relying on patterns of familiarity, flexibility and frames in our thinking. In the spirit of mindfulness, individuals have the potential to make conscious choices in their own thinking and to listen to their own internal voice while accepting ideas from others. With the ability to move beyond habitual patterns in thinking individuals can experience authentic innovation and novel ideas.
