Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Thinking Roadmap Seminars and Workshops - Background
(Link to upcoming class schedule - listed below)
(Link to seminar and workshop descriptions listed below)

Beginning in 1995, colleagues within Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR) in Canoga Park, California (then a division of Rockwell International) created the concept of "A Thinking Roadmap" as a means to formally integrate their classroom education efforts (both seminars and workshops), all with the aim of leading a thinking transformation, both individual and organizational. The need for the thinking transformation is to foster better thinking about sub-systems, psychology, variation, knowledge, and their interactions - elements recognized as the basis of W. Edwards Deming's “System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK)". The phrase Thinking Roadmap followed from Rockwell's concept of a "Technology Roadmap," wherein each division of Rockwell was responsible for defining both their short-term and long-term technology development plans and presenting them periodically to corporate offices. In seeing the vast opportunities for simultaneously improving the thinking skills of the entire enterprise, including employees, suppliers, and customers, Rocketdyne's Enterprise Thinking Network was formed to lead a thinking transformation, with a Thinking Roadmap as a means to create awareness of the thinking of Russell Ackoff, Edward de Bono, W. Edwards Deming, Tom Johnson, and Genichi Taguchi, to name a few of the thinking pioneers
whose writings and teachings they have incorporated into their roadmap. For clarification, this curriculum development effort is known as "A Thinking Roadmap," not "The Thinking Roadmap," so as to imply it is the outgrowth of an ongoing development and will never be interpreted as a closed solution, nor the only solution to helping for fostering both an individual and organization thinking transformation. A recent presentation by Bill Bellows, titled "From Infinity (and Zero) and Beyond" offers insights on Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Thinking Roadmap efforts, in addition to contrasts to both "Lean" and "Six Sigma Quality" efforts. Go to our InSights page to find a pdf file of his presentation, in addition to an audio file.

The efforts of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Enterprise Thinking Network to foster "better thinking about thinking" continues today, with a process in place to maintain this awareness within seminar and workshop attendees as they leave the confines of the classroom experience and return to their workplace positions.
The thinking transformation effort has been designed to inspire a better understanding of "team work," and "working together," with "thinking together," a result of "better thinking about thinking," as a foundation. The role of their Thinking Roadmap is to introduce fundamental aspects of thinking together and to build upon this foundation. In doing so, the Enterprise Thinking seminar has been designed to provide the fundamental aspects of their thinking transformation and subsequent classes, such as Six Thinking Hats, Managing Variation as a System, Kepner-Tregoe Problem Solving and Decision Making, and a Study Session for Deming's last book, The New Economics, have been integrated into this 200+ hour curriculum. Included in the roadmap are classroom (in-person) events, such as Managing Variation as a System, and also teleconference events (with toll-free numbers provided to U.S. residents), such as the Study Sessions in The New Economics and also a series of monthly conference calls with noted Thought Leaders, known as the Ongoing Discussion.

The collaborative design of the roadmap allows for plentiful opportunities for "continuous and connected learning," as seminar and workshop attendees are exposed to repeated themes through the entire curriculum. As an example, attendees of the Six Thinking Hats seminar are likely to be reminded of W. Edwards Deming's System of Profound Knowledge and Genichi Taguchi's Quality Loss Function, and Russ Ackoff's concept of Idealized Design, not to mention Tom Johnson's "Mangement by Means," all within the confines of a class dedicated to Edward de Bono's concept of parallel thinking. Such systemic integration is paramount to Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Enterprise Thinking Network's efforts to foster and develop "better thinking about thinking."

The In2:InThinking Network was started in 2001 as an means of combining the efforts of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Enterprise Thinking Network efforts with the thinking transformation efforts and interest of like-minded colleagues outside of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, with the original intent of working together to host an annual conference. Together, we have designed and hosted an annual Forum in Los Angeles on six occasions since 2002, with our seventh Forum coming in April. Visit our Annual Forums home page to learn more of these efforts. For more insights about the thought leaders we have currently integrated into In2:InThinking Network, visit our InSights home page as well as our Ongoing Discussion home page.
